Mission Team Meeting Minutes
Overview of CUMC Missions/Outreach from 2009
Senior Meal Site – The second week of each month, volunteers from CUMC transport lunch from The Fireplace Restaurant to First Baptist Church in Weaverville for the Senior Meal Site which meets Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 12 PM. Supported by funding and volunteers from Weaverville churches and businesses, Council on Aging, and DSS, this program provides fellowship, activities, education, and a meal daily on weekdays all year for seniors in our community.
North Buncombe ESL Project – The second Monday of each month from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at First Baptist Church/Weaverville, volunteers from CUMC provide adult tutoring, homework assistance and child care for people(10-15 adults and 10-12 children) learning English as a second language. This is a joint ministry funded and supported by North Buncombe area churches. This program continues each Monday night and goes year round. In addition, a new program called Hope Pantry accepts donations of specific food items for students needing food assistance.
Room in the Inn – This community ministry of hospitality provides housing to women in Asheville in need of shelter 365 days a year. Four times each year, CUMC provides the church van and volunteers to drive up to 12 women for a week, morning and evening, from Asbury Methodist, a host church in Asheville, to the AHOPE Center in downtown Asheville for education and counseling. CUMC women also provide personal hygiene items and gift bags for the women each time the church provides transportation during the year. This year, CUMC volunteers also began offering haircuts to the ladies during the week transportation was provided.
ABCCM/NBSM – CUMC supports North Buncombe Samaritan Ministry, an arm of Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, with ongoing funding ($170/mo for 2009), collection of needed supplies, and volunteers throughout the year. ABCCM provides shelter, counseling, medical supplies and personnel, food, clothing, money for utility bills, medications and heating costs for those in need in Buncombe County.
Conference Mission Initiatives – CUMC supported Stop Hunger Now at the WNCC Annual Conference in June with a $100 donation (400 meals) and 14 adult, youth and children volunteers who traveled to Conference to pack meals. 106,087 meals were packed in two days to be sent around the world to orphanages, schools and disaster areas. In addition, Christ Love Preschool and CUMC collected protein foods to donate at Conference to be distributed throughout Western NC through local food banks.
Habitat for Humanity – Habitat is a Christ-centered housing ministry designed to provide decent housing for everyone who needs it. Through partnerships with prospective homeowners, this ministry provides a “hand up” to families in need. CUMC donated $1620 in 2009 for Habitat and provided volunteers to work on the Methodist/Presbyterian House during the summer.
LIFE Youth Group – CUMC LIFE Youth Group is very active in missions and service to others. Besides participating in work days at Camp Tekoa and ReCreation Experiences, contributing to the NB ESL Project Hope Pantry and other projects throughout the year, middle school youth went to Chattanooga, TN in August on a Youth Works mission trip.
Children’s Ministry – The mission emphasis for Vacation Bible School in July was the MANNABUNDANCE Backpack Program. Each week in partnership with MANNA Food Bank, eligible children in our partner school, Weaverville Primary, are sent home with up to 5 lbs of food in their backpacks for the weekend. The children kicked off this new ministry by collecting food items during VBS. The program continues throughout the school year with the 4th/5th graders getting the bags of food ready on Wednesday nights and adults delivering the bags on Fridays. This outreach is coordinated by the Children’s Ministry at CUMC.
Feed the Team – CUMC has continued to support the North Buncombe High School football team by preparing and serving a pre-game meal one Friday during the football season. Go Black Hawks!
ReCreation Experiences – CUMC housed two mission teams from VA and AB staying in the area during the summer. These teams worked for this local housing ministry that provides free home repairs and supplies for residents of Madison County. CUMC LIFE Youth Group has also volunteered for this ministry.
Operation Christmas Child – Samaritan’s Purse reaches children in many countries with gifts packed in shoeboxes and the Gospel message to show that there are many who care about them and who want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. In 2009, CUMC prepared, dedicated and added 41 shoebox gifts to the collection nationally and internationally being sent to more than 95 countries during the Christmas season.
Missionary Support – A Christmas Eve Service love offering has been sent to the Faust family for the past few years. The Fausts are with Wycliffe Bible Translators, called to missionary service in scriptural translation. Until the spring of 2009, Andy, Mary Ellen, Caleb and Abigail Faust were living and working in Central Asia. They are currently on home assignment in Vancouver, Canada.
