Christ UMC’s Mission Ministries
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed
me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Weaverville Senior Meal Site – The second week of each month, volunteers from CUMC
transport lunch from The Fireplace Restaurant to First Baptist Church in Weaverville for the
Senior Meal Site which meets Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 12 PM. Supported by funding
and volunteers from Weaverville churches and businesses, Council on Aging, and DSS, this
program provides fellowship, activities, education, and a meal daily on weekdays all year for
seniors in our community.
Room in the Inn – This community ministry of hospitality provides housing to women in
Asheville in need of shelter 365 days a year. Three times each year, CUMC provides the church
van and volunteers to drive up to 12 women for a week, morning and evening, from Asbury
UMC, a host church in Asheville, to the AHOPE Center in downtown Asheville for education
and counseling. CUMC also donates personal hygiene items for the women during the year.
One Great Hour of Sharing – In a special offering during March of every year, Christ UMC
donates to help support the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR).
ABCCM/NBSM – Christ UMC supports North Buncombe Samaritan Ministry, an arm of
Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, with ongoing funding each year ($180/mo).
ABCCM provides shelter, counseling, medical supplies and medical care, food, clothing, money
for utility bills, medications and heating costs for those in need in Buncombe County. Carol
Young and Pat Farris deliver food every week to NBSM.
Habitat for Humanity – Habitat is a Christ-centered housing ministry designed to provide
decent housing for everyone who needs it. Through partnerships with prospective homeowners,
this ministry provides a “hand up” to families in need. CUMC donates monetarily to Habitat
through collection of gifts and also provides volunteers to work on the Methodist House during
ReCreation Experiences – CUMC houses two mission teams in the area during the summer
to help ReCreation Experiences with their overflow of mission teams. ReCreation Experiences
provides free home repairs and supplies for residents of Madison County.
Adult/Youth Mission Trips – Mission trips planned as needed
Operation Christmas Child – Samaritan’s Purse reaches children in many countries with gifts
packed in shoeboxes and the Gospel message to show that there are many who care about them
and who want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Christ UMC prepares, dedicates shoebox
gifts that add to the collection nationally and internationally being sent to more than 95 countries
during the Christmas season.
Missionary Support – A Christmas Eve Service love offering has been sent to the Faust family
for the past few years. The Fausts are with Wycliffe Bible Translators, called to missionary
service in scriptural translation. Until the spring of 2009, Andy, Mary Ellen, Caleb and Abigail
Faust were living and working in Central Asia. They are currently on home assignment in
MANNAbundance Backpack Program - This ministry is led by our Children’s Ministry Team.
Each week in partnership with MANNA Food Bank, children from 25 families in our partner
school, Weaverville Primary, are sent home with up to 5 lbs of food in their backpacks for the
weekend. Food items come from MANNA Food Bank and donations from the Christ UMC
church family. The program continues throughout the school year with the volunteers from
Christ UMC (including the Joyous Ones) getting the bags of food ready and delivering the bags
to the school.
Back to School Clinic - This ministry led by our Children’s Ministry Team provides back
to school supplies for children in our community. Christ UMC coordinates with other
congregations and local barbers/hairdressers to provide school supplies, gently used clothing,
food and haircuts to more than 200 children and their families.
Candlelight Stroll in Weaverville - In the name of Jesus, free gifts are given to everyone. (In
2011, free flashlights were distributed)
Firecracker 5-K - In the name of Jesus, free water is given to everyone. $100 is given to the
Kiwanas for academic scholarships.
Emmaus Community: Christ UMC takes an active part in the Blue Ridge Emmaus Community
by sponsoring others and service. Everyone is encouraged to take part.
Alpha Outreach: Through Alpha Courses (Alpha Basic Course and Alpha Marriage Course)
offered to the community, everyone is given an opportunity to come to know Jesus as their Lord
and Savior and live in relationship with God and one another.
